Jackson, Andrew (1767-1845) - 7th president of the United States (1829-1837) and territorial governor of Florida (1821). Born poor of Scotch-Irish ancestry in a log cabin in the Carolinas, Jackson rose to prominence as an Indian fighter and a general in the War of 1812. His campaign against the Seminole Indians in Florida in 1818 contributed to the U.S.'s acquisition of Florida from Spain. Jackson apparently did not like his post as governor of the new territory and served only 4 months.
